It’s My Turn ~ by Diana Ross

One of my favorite personal development mantras is the song “It’s My Turn” by Diana Ross. Yes it’s a little bit disco and it fuels my soul.

Here are the top ten lessons this song teaches me….

  1. Living for yourself will set you free.
  2. Don’t apologize for embracing your needs and passions.
  3. It’s okay if you don’t always have all the answers.
  4. Take more chances.
  5. It’s not easy to let go, but sometimes it’s essential.
  6. Be real and don’t cover up your feelings.
  7. Be diligent on finding your path in life and celebrate moments on your journey.
  8. Change is the only constant.
  9. Take time for yourself.
  10. Reach for the stars.

Lyrics

I cant cover up my feelings
In the name of love
Or play it safe
For a while that was easy
And if living for myself
Is what Im guilty of
Go on and sentence me
Ill still be free

Its my turn
To see what I can see
I hope youll understand
This times just for me

Because its my turn
With no apologies
Ive given up the truth
To those Ive tried to please

But now its my turn
If I dont have all the answers
At least I know Ill take my share of chances
Aint no use of holding on
When nothing stays the same

So Ill let it rain
cause the rain aint gonna hurt me
And Ill let you go
though I know it wont be easy

Its my turn
With no more room for lies
For years Id seen my life
Through someone elses eyes

And now its my turn
To try and find my way
And if I should get lost
At least Ill own today

Its my turn
Yes, its my turn
And there aint no use in holding on
When nothing stays the same

So Ill let it rain
cause the rain aint gonna hurt me
And Ill let you go
though I know it wont be easy

Its my turn
To see what I can see
I hope youll understand
This times just for me

Because its my turn
To turn and say goodbye
I sure would like to know
That youre still on my side

Because its my turn
Its my turn

Its my turn
To start from number one
Trying to undo
Some damage thats been done

But now its my turn
To reach and touch the sky
No ones gonna say
At least I didnt try

Its my turn
Yes, its my turn
Its my turn
Its my turn
Its my turn

  • I don’t have a song that fuels me… but “take time for yourself” is really, REALLY important.

  • @Vered – I agree. I have incorporated 1 night off a week (ahhh Thursday nights!!!) and I go on one vacation all by myself every year. My “taking time for yourself” time fuels my soul. I couldn’t imagine not having that time and yet I still consider it a luxury.

  • Hi Stacey – Your top 10 lessons are great! And the first one particularly is hard for some people to understand – but we have to do it, I think.

I really like the song – all the best – Robin

  • Over the last year or so, I’ve found that music really does “fuel my soul”. In fact, just yesterday as I was driving to work, a song came on the radio. It was weird, but everything just seemed “right” when the song came on. And I don’t even remember the song, except that is was a song from the ’80’s. It was like the sky lit up.

But, music is really becoming an important part of my life. I have several:
    – A new artist I’ve discovered recently whose music just seems to speak to me: Christine Kane. Everything that I’ve heard by her touches me in a special way.
    – One particular song that really speaks to me with it’s words: “It’s Your Song” by Garth Brooks. I believe he wrote it for his mother. But it really hits me in the power we have to affect other people’s lives – maybe our kids, our spouse, even strangers.
    – Another artist/group that has a lot of deep meaning: U2. Much of their music.

Like Robin, I think your first lesson above about living for yourself can be the toughest, but also the most liberating. If we can reach that state of living for ourselves, on our terms, we’ll find the life we desire.

I really love this list you’ve put together on what that song means to you. In reading it, it makes me think more about the meaning I get from the music that touches me the most.

  • Oh my I’m so happy to read this and learn that I’m not alone, there are so many songs that fuel my soul. I absolutely love music!! I love 32 Flavors by Alana Davis, and more recently “Say” by John Mayer…hmmm, maybe I’ll do my own post on this, it’s a great idea! And P.S. I like to consider myself a disco diva and love your song choice. I’ve been known to karaoke this song in my living room, to my husband’s dismay! 🙂

  • I’m another one who needs time for themselves. I’d go crazy if I never had time to reflect and do what I wanted. Some people don’t understand that, but hey, it’s up to everyone to decide what they need, right?

  • @Robin – I think people will often label someone as selfish he/she is living for herself, but I think it’s essential. It reminds me of the airplane metaphor…if you don’t put your oxygen mask on first, you will never be able to take care of others.

@Lance – Thanks for all of the great music leads. I’m going to conduct an amazing YouTube search this evening to listen (and maybe even dance) to the songs.

@Stacey – I love music too and I’m not familiar with the songs you mentioned. I will be searching for them on YouTube tonight along with Lance’s suggestions. I belt out “It’s My Turn” when I’m driving but may have to move it to my living room for some old fashion karaoke.

@Hunter Nuttalls – I’ll always be the first person to sign up for some alone time. I love it and crave it. I also have some people in my life that don’t understand my need to be alone.

  • The song that keeps playing over and over again in my head these days is the one in my Mind Movie. I had to keep playing it aloud while working on my video. Your song in this post helped me with a temporary mental break…LOL!!

I can most identify with your need to be on your own sometimes. I treasure my quiet time a lot. With a noisy family around, I have to find the space when everyone is asleep.

  • For what it’s worth, Stacey — Christine Kane has a website and blog — http://christinekane.com/blog and another site/blog where she is creating music and letting anyone provide suggestions, etc. — which I think is a pretty cool idea for an artist — and that’s at — http://bemyrecordlabel.com/ . If you don’t like the music, skip it, but if you do — these are both some really awesome links.

    Dance away!!

  • @Evelyn – Watching your video is on my list of things to do tonight. I am happy I was able to provide you with a mental break. Any time my friend…just ask!

@MizFits – I’m so excited to be receiving all of these new song leads. Any song about packing up and leaving home can make we cry over my boys (and they are only 2 & 4 years old).

@Lance – Thanks Lance. I’m loving Christine Kane’s music (basically became an instant fan). In fact I’m highlighting one of her songs from YouTube on my blog today.

  • Diane

Hi Stacy, I love your post…I just shared it with some friends. Hope ya don’t mind? I have so many favorites its hard to really pick just one. Here’s some: The Beatles…Let It Be, Natalie Cole… Unforgettable, Calling on Angels……Music has always been a Big part of my life… and I love to dance. I love all types too.

Your lists was great and I agree sometimes the first one is the hardest.

  • @Diane – Thanks for sharing your songs. I love how music takes me to a different place and time.

  • Encouraging post. I think this is a valuable lesson that all women could stand to learn from ~ they simply must take time for themselves to refresh and refuel otherwise they will get burned out and have nothing left to give. Especially moms ~ taking time for themselves helps them to remember who they are outside of that “mommy person.” And it provides the opportunity to create and be a whole person.
