I’m feeling sluggish today. I took the afternoon off. It’s hard to focus. I’m craving sugar. I’m longing for my blanket and bed. Instead of fighting it, I’m choosing to be still and acknowledge how I am feeling.

10 minutes later…

I have to admit that I was multi-tasking as I was sitting still. I started looking at my Google Reader list and saw Gretchen Rubin’s guest post on Zen Habits titled Beat the Holiday or Financial Blues: 9 Tips for Making Yourself Happier in the Next 30 Minutes.

Since I have the next 30 minutes to focus on making myself feel better, I am going to do a live blogging experiment by working her suggestions and blogging as I go. Let’s see if my mood is lifted and if I can find a happiness boost.

Here we go…..

2:07pm Boost your energy. She is suggesting I go outside (I think it is 3 degrees out right now) for a brisk ten-minute walk. She thinks movement and sunlight will help shift my mood. I’ll be back in ten minutes….

2:28pm I’m back! Fresh air, deep breaths, sunlight, and power walking felt great. This was the first time I officially exercised since Thanksgiving day! Yahoo – perhaps the spell has been broken.

2:29pm Count your blessings. She is encouraging me to take ten minutes to focus on my gratitude attitude. Here I go…

Things going right in my life > My growing and healthy children, my partnership with my husband to build the best possible marriage, planning for my winter vacation, planning for upcoming visitors, my blog.

Things other people do to help me > My husband helps me in countless ways, Tom Vokler helps me commit to my decisions, my parents help me see the bright side of things, my children help me fight adulitis (adultitis is my new favorite word).

Things I am thankful for > Quality time I’m spending with my husband, children, parents, family, and friends. This exercise.

2:43pm Reach out to friends. I talked to my mom while I went for my walk (yes, I know I’m still multi-tasking). I also left a voicemail message for one of my dearest friends. Hearing her voice brought a smile to my day.

2:45pm Perform an action that reflects your values. I value short posts, so I’ll keep this section short. I value the sense of serenity so I just lit some candles. I value physical well-being so I just drank a bottle of water.

2:49pm Rid yourself of a nagging task. This one was painful and was also one of Gretchen’s suggestions. I just scheduled a dentist’s appointment. After all these years, I still hate going to the dentist…but taking this off my to-do list did give me the rush of energy and relief that Gretchen promised.

2:55pm Create a calmer environment. This one is easy because the amazing women who clean my house just left. Now I just need to maintain this mess-free space.

2:57pm Lay the groundwork for some future fun. Someone recently observed that my life looks like 95% responsibility and 5% fun. This shocking, raw, observation broke my heart. It must just be an outsider’s perspective and not a true reflection of my life. Back to the task at hand, I just looked into some upcoming day trips for my family. During our holiday break we are thinking about going to a local indoor waterpark. I’m excited about spending a day splashing around with my kids. I also checked out photos of where we are going for our sunny winter vacation. The excitement is building.

2:57pm Do a good deed. I’m not sure if it was a good deed, but I just emailed a friend to see if we can get together before the end of the year. I also stressed how important he is to me, even though life is busy and we haven’t seen each other in many months. I feel happy that this person is in my life. This part of my experiment took me 20 minutes b/c I got lost in an email haze.

3:27pm Act happy. I’m smiling! I’m smiling! Look at the picture on the top right corner of my blog. See me smiling? Don’t I look friendly and approachable? Don’t you find my smile contagious? Are you smiling now too?

At the end of Gretchen’s post, she encourages you to practice being selfish…”Some people worry that wanting to be happier is a selfish goal. To the contrary. Studies show that happier people are more sociable, likeable, healthy, and productive—and they’re more inclined to help other people. So in working to boost your own happiness, you’re benefiting others as well.”

It is now 3:33pm.
This 30 minute experiment took me 86 minutes to complete. I now feel energized, thankful, hopeful, replenished, and happy.

This is your moment!
Leveraging the conversation going on at Zen Habits, what strategies have you tried to give yourself a happiness boost?

  • Oh this is great to read! I usually take a walk when I need a boost. This was a great deal to take place in 86 minutes. I have never tried to light candles in a moment in which there was not an occasion in which to do so. Something so simple such as this is usually forgotten. Perfect timing on your house being clean. That is enough to calm me for the entire day.

I hope you are feeling much better. Slow down and enjoy the holidays.

Crickets last blog post..What is wrong with this picture?

  • Cricket – Tammy – Is this you? Do you have two blogs? I do feel much better and seem to have much more energy this evening to spend quality time with my children.

  • Hi Stacey. I’m glad you are feeling better! Sounds like this was a day of building muscle for you 🙂 What do I do to give myself a happiness boost? I will go for a walk. Sometimes I like to sit and see “what is here now”; why am I feeling that way. And then I ask myself how can I view this situation differently. I use my imagination.I see it from a new perspective. It helps to move me into a new space.

Davina’s last blog post..A Positively Dysfunctional Christmas

  • Hey Stacey, I’m curious… I ticked the option to enable CommentLuv to parse my last blog post, but it hasn’t shown up???

  • Davina – Thank you for sharing your process with me. Working the tactics this afternoon definitely gave me a new perspective. Also, I can manually enter the CommentLuv and will look into the problem. I’m working on upgrading to the version of WordPress, which will eventually solve the problem completely.

  • Your smile is contagious Stacey! I ALWAYS feel brightened up whenever I stop by here – and it’s because that’s the first thing I see – you and your smile!

Happiness boost? I needed one last night. So, my two boys and I started a nerf gun war. It was wild, it was crazy, and I forgot all about the other “things” that were cluttering my mind. It was great! (the girls were gone – so it was a boys night at the house for a little while…) (this probably didn’t help to create a calmer environment, though…)

Adultitis – I love that word too! Here’s to us (all of us) curing ourselves of any signs of this vicious disease (it sounds like a disease, doesn’t it!)!

Glad to hear this experiment renewed you Stacey! And very cool, doing this “live”.

    Lances last blog post..Bounce!

  • Lance – *Thanks* for the extra smile. It sounds like your boys night was a perfect happiness boost. Sometimes using up some extra energy and acting silly is just what we need to shake adultitis (even if it’s only for a little while).

  • No matter how busy I am at work, I always try to take 30 minutes and take a brisk walk – even though I do an “official” workout either before or after work. Walks and gratitude really makes a big difference.

  • This was great! I love that you live-blogged it and hey, it shows that self-improvement blogs WORK. 🙂

Vered – MomGrinds last blog post..Ageism Is The Last Acceptable Form Of Discrimination

  • Carla – That is my ultimate goal and what I was doing during the spring and summer of 2008. Somehow I fell off the wagon.

Vered – I enjoyed the live blogging. I was in the moment, speaking my raw truth, and being aware of the experience.

  • Hi, Thanks for the pointer to Gretchen’s article. I’m gonna give this a go sometime. Nice to see an example too 😉

LifeMadeGreat | Juliets last blog post..What Are The Signs That You Need A Break?

  • One of the surprises I learned is that action comes before motivation.

Most people think it’s the other way around. So they wait for inspiration, before acting, but that’s the problem. If you know how motivation works, it’s a little tip that can serve you a lifetime.

Once you know it, the “knew it all along” phenomenon kicks in and it seems obvious.

I always like walking at the beach. It always boost everything!

  • I’ve got to try this…at the moment, I’m overwhelmed and so glad to read this..

  • Juliet – I highly recommend doing this experiment when you are feeling sluggish. Compared to the nap I was going to take, this experiment did wonders. It forces you to smile!

J.D. – Amen! Action does come before motivation. That is why I know I just have to get my body moving to exercise. Take action, then course correct as needed.

Diane – Me too. I have a few more weeks until I can see the beach again.

BC – This is a great exercise if you are feeling overwhelmed! Overwhelmed Bloggers Unite!

  • What a great thing to do! I’m getting ready to run a 1/2 marathon. I ran 8 miles on Sunday and have been tired and sore since. Today I didn’t feel like going out for my 4 mile run. I made myself do it anyway. Felt great afterward and am running a 10 mile race this Sunday. It looks like I’m going to make it!

  • Stacey, this was a great idea for a post. I can completely see how this 30 minute exercise would make you feel happier. I felt happier just reading about you doing it!

I snuggle up in the hammock or on my bed with a book, or take a walk on the beach, or watch re-runs of Sex and the City when I want to lift my mood and energy levels. if it’s really bad, I try and organise a friend for a walk and a coffee and that always does the trick.

    Merry Christmas!

Kelly@SHE-POWERs last blog post..Slow Down. Breathe. Enjoy the Moment

  • Kelly – With a winter snow storm filled with sleet and snow about to hit my town any minute, my count down to walking on the beach as begun!

  • Reading posts like this give me an energy boost and a good laugh – I loved this, “This 30 minute experiment took me 86 minutes to complete.” So true! I like the suggestions and your response to them. Planning future fun is so badly needed. The only thing I would add that I try to do is laugh as much as I can in a day. Isn’t funny how that can be so hard and far reaching some days? If I can get on the treadmill at 10:00 pm and watch Everybody Loves Raymond for 30 min. my day will have been complete.

B.Wildes last blog post..A Few Random Christmas Memories…Because You Never Know

  • B. Wilde – Thanks for the great feedback. It’s amazing how many times I laughed while doing this experiment. I agree we all can use more laughter in our lives.

  • Stacey,

I love the idea of doing the exercise live and walking us through it. Thanks for sharing your personal experience so openly. In a way I’m glad it took you 86 minutes, because it shows everyone else the importance of being flexible and that things still work out even when they don’t go exactly to plan. Great post!

Daphnes last blog post..A Season To Celebrate

  • This post might have saved my life! And even if I’m exaggerating, it’s only a bit 😉
I have so much work to do that has to be completed before Christmas and it just overwhelms me. Thick gray clouds outside blocking the sun don’t help either, nor does the freezing rain …
Thanks for giving my personal motivation a swift kick where it hurts, hopefully it will help not only today but in the long run too!

  • Hi Stacey. Thanks for parsing my post.

Davinas last blog post..A Positively Dysfunctional Christmas

  • Great experiment. Definitely getting fresh air into the lungs and sun on to the skin is a boost. That is one of my main happiness boosts. The others are crazy, upbeat music and, don’t laugh, trying to do the housework to the rhythm – yep that sad sign of another multi-tasker. Though ABBA and vacuuming is a sublime experience. Last but not least is calling a girlfriend, surfing great blogs (yes, call me an addict but I am in awe of how wonderful some blogs are) and deep stretching and breathing or an some interval training to get the heart rate into a mad zone. But simply the best is my son or daughter ringing up and saying “let’s get together – what are you up to Mum?”

leonas last blog post..Trust Who You Are

  • Daphne – Thanks. I want to do more live blogging…it made me feel so alive!

Miami Setai – I hope the motivation took you into the New Year full of life!

Davina – Thank you for reading about my partly sluggish day.

Leona – I love being outside and I’m always amazed how the cold winter weather keeps me in doors unless I force myself outside for fresh air.

  • There is obviously a lot to know about this. I think you made some good points in Features also.

  • It is very happy to share your ideas. thanks a lot.

  • Every one hate to go the dentist but if you go where is cheaper try medical tourism they came with dental holiday packages . Good luck!
